Days after Philadelphia officials pushed the city one step closer to a so-called “doomsday” education plan that would see two dozen schools close, construction began on a $400-million prison said to be the second-most expensive state project ever.

Pennsylvania’s School Reform Commission voted on June 1 to approve a $2.4 billion budget, ignoring hours of pleas from students, parents, educators and community members who warned the budget would cripple city schools.

The plan would close 23 public schools, roughly 10 per cent of the city’s total. Commissioners rejected a proposal that would have only closed four of the 27 schools that were on the block for closure.

Without the means to cover a $304 million debt, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, students can expect to go back to school in September without new books, paper, counselors, clubs, librarians, assistant principals or secretaries. All athletics, art and music programs would be eliminated and as many as 3,000 people could lose their jobs.

Only one of five state commissioners voted against the proposal, warning that Republican Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett’s administration had not looked hard enough elsewhere for proper funds.

That $304 million windfall is unlikely to be filled because the Republican-controlled Pennsylvania House of Representatives recently passed a tax break for corporations that will cost Pennsylvania residents an estimated $600 million to $800 million annually.

Newly unemployed teachers might consider submitting their resumes to the Department of Corrections, though, with the news that the supposedly cash-strapped government is digging deep to spend $400 million for the construction of State Correctional Institutions Phoenix I and II.

The penitentiary, which is technically two facilities, will supplement at least two existing jails, the Western Penitentiary at Pittsburgh and Fayette County Jail. Pittsburgh’s Western Penitentiary was built in 2003 with the original intention of replacing Fayette County Jail, but the prison has struggled with lawsuits claiming widespread physical and sexual abuse of prisoners.

Scheduled to be completed in 2015, the new prison’s cell blocks and classroom will be capable of housing almost 5,000 inmates. Officials said there will be buildings for female inmates, the mentally ill and a death row population.

Journalist Rhania Khalek noted that the racial disparities in the education system and prison complex, where 60 per cent of all people are of color, have created a literal “school-to-prison-pipeline.”

“In Philadelphia, black students comprise 81 per cent of those who will be impacted by the closings despite accounting for just 58 per cent of the overall student population,” she wrote. “In stark contrast, just 4 per cent of those affected are white kids who make up 14 per cent of Philly students. And though they make up 81 per cent of Philadelphia students, 93 per cent of kids affected by the closings are low-income.”

It’s really hard to believe lately that it’s been 4 years since my mother’s sudden death. I’ve really feeling guilty, dejected, and very alone lately. I am feeling so sad lately that I really just want to disappear somedays. Eve worse I feel like walking out the door and never returning. However, I should feel happier than I actually feel lately. I’ve got two degrees under my belt, I’ve went to my dream college and graduated a year-and-a half early. I need to find work, and yet I’m unsure of what to do or what to go for. Even worse, I am afraid that no one’s going to hire me because I lack experience due to focusing on school and helping a sick parent for years.

I feel so afraid, scared, and so alone. I’m getting to the point that my own relatives don’t even know me anymore and we’re together very frequently. I’m also at the point where I don’t even socialize with my relatives when we’re out at a lunch or dinner, I don’t really say anything and I have nothing to say.

I don’t know what’s happening to me anymore, I just feel like I’m falling into a abyss and the one person who truly understood is dead and has been dead for 4 years. I have so many relatives and yet, I feel so alone and I feel I am nothing and I have nothing.

Worst Easter...probably in recent memory

I, like a damned fool that I was, went down to Wildwood with my grandma and aunt. My grandma and I work well together and often have coexist great. However, my aunt, who often sounds very accusatory to me, treats like I’m five years old.

We had an argument about driving, I do drive (around the neighborhood) but not all over the city. I am still a new driver. Then, things got bad, and I just left the condo we were staying in. I needed a break. I have TONS of stuff on my mind (my family is pretty much falling apart, my health issue had come up that has me really freaked out, trying to drive more, getting into grad school, etc) including losing my mother 4 years ago. Then, I broke down because I feel everything is breaking down. Everything is going bad and I can’t stop it. So, my aunt is still in my face and she still treats me like shit. She claims she cares, but her delivery of talks often end badly.

I do listen to what she says, contrary to what she claims. Basically, things get even worse and I have to deal with things on my own. I have been doing VERY well handling things on my own after my mom has died. Things I wasn’t able to do before, because my mom thought I couldn’t handle it (etc). I have handled my money well, I do great with my health insurance, school tuitions, taxes, student loans, all on my own. I have been an only child my whole life and because of that, I have had to do things on my own. I always known to rely on myself or my academic abilities (my family isn’t made of money, so I’ve always known to do things alone). So, when my aunt says that “You can’t do things on my own, you have to rely on others”. To be honest, that seems a little-counterintuitive.

I feel that in order to do things and to be more independent, I need to do things on my own and alone. Furthermore, she claims I’m not strong and that I’m weak-skinned. I’ve been called bitch, yellow (as a black woman), freak, nerd, slow, delayed, autistic, and smart-ass. I’ve encountered so many trials and tribulations that my aunt has never had to face in the new millennium as a adult that I’ve had to handle on my own as a young woman. Not to mention, handling and proving myself worthy as a normal student (while being called a autistic child as a kid, with a false diagnosis) and had to pass myself as a “normal” kid in the school system in Philadelphia.

I know what my aunt is saying about driving more, I need to gather more confidence. However, considering all of the shit that I’ve been through with both of my families (who are quirky, damaged, and destroyed) as they are —- I’ve done VERY Well. Sometimes, I need to not be so strong, I need to let things fall by the way-side. I have issues with God, after my mom died but I can soldier on alone (however, I know he’s with me…I’m still shaken after what happened).

After all of this, I still claim that my aunt does care about me but she and I can’t get along — I think we’re too similar. After all of this, she called herself a bitch (her words not mine). She can really mean, bitchy, rude, and orders me around like I’m 5. I do care for her though, I just don’t need to be treated like I’m 5. After what I’ve been through and survived, I know I can handle anything that happens. Shit, I’ve buried my mom and grandad. I had to sign and put my dying mother into hospice at the age of 21 ( I don’t know many people who has done that, so yeah).

I refuse to sink to her level, I know I shouldn’t worry about certains issues that I can’t control or my family issues. I’m going to do what I’ve been doing and it’s been going okay (worry a bit less).

Resentment of the Day: CNN Accused of Pro-Rapist Bias in Steubenville Verdict Coverage

Following yesterday’s guilty verdict in the Steubenville Rape Case, several CNN reporters including Candy Crowley, Poppy Harlow and Paul Callan have come under some heavy criticisms for being sympathetic towards the co-defendants during their coverage, describing the students as “very good students” with “promising futures.” CNN’s post-verdict commentaries have been compared to a comedy sketch that aired in 2011 about an athlete who “overcame” rape charges and an online petition calling on the anchors to issue an apology has already broken 53,000 signatures on Change.org.

However, it is worth mentioning that CNN anchors are not the only people who have pitied the co-defendants. In the wake of this debate, the single topic blog Public Shaming has been highlighting dozens of tweets and comments on Facebook and Reddit from many others vocalizing their support of the boys.
